Exquisite castles are studded across Europe, evoking bygone eras with their beautiful architecture.

Travelling through Europe is easy-peasy with all the cheap flights on offer – you can go anywhere, sometimes for not even much more than a nice meal out. Sounds like a no-brainer to me! Exquisite castles are studded across Europe, evoking bygone eras with their beautiful architecture. They speak of another time in a land that holds secrets. Just when you thought you had seen it all, the castles of Europe will leave your jaw dropped once again. Here are some of my favourite castles in Europe, the ones that I consider to be must-sees.

I would recommend taking guided tours where you can; it’s one of the easiest ways of learning about the rich history of these magnificent buildings. Though, if that’s not your cup of tea, that’s just as cool! A picture is worth a thousand words and you won’t leave feeling disappointed. I certainly didn’t!

1. Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany

Ludwig II, King of Bavaria, built this stunning castle as an escape from public life, dedicating it to Richard Wagner and his operas. In 1886 after his death, it was opened up to the public and it is now one of the most often visited castles in Europe.

2. Eltz Castle, Germany

This incredible medieval castle is still owned by a section of the original Eltz family who lived there in the 12th century…amazing! The Eltz family have ensured that it still exists in its original glory, with plenty of its original furnishings.

3. Corvin Castle, Romania

Remember the cheap flights I was talking about? It’s time to fly! Located in Transylvania, this Gothic-style architecture will be worth it. With humble origins in the 14th century, in 1440, Ioan of Hunedoara recast it into the magnificent construction it is now.

4. Bran Castle, Romania

Whilst you’re in Romania, you must pay a visit to Bran Castle, or, as it is also known, ‘Dracula’s Castle’. Its distinctive architecture is awe-inspiring and formidable, and it is now open for you to enjoy as a museum. I highly recommend this one if you’re looking for a history lesson!

5. Eilean Donan Castle, Scotland

This one is a change of scene and a must-see all in one. An icon of Scotland, it’s located on a small island on the west coast. It’s been rebuilt numerous times, and its tumultuous history gives it the character it exudes today. If you’re looking for a history lesson AND a fairytale, pay this one a visit.

6. Chateau de Chambord, France

The distinctive architecture of this castle makes it one of the most recognizable in the world, but there’s a good reason for that – it’s breathtaking. It was not designed for defence and so it is highly decorative and not as suited to the local climate as it could be…oh, how we suffer for beauty!

7. Moszna Castle, Poland

Oh boy, for fairytales, you can’t miss this one. And this one is perfect for a winter Euro-trip, as it is even more incredible in snow! Its history goes back to the mid 17th century and is characterised by not two but three different architectural styles. Plus, the gardens are stunning and make for an enjoyable stroll.

8. Gravensteen, Belgium

Gravensteen has always been about defence, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t evoke the fairytales of yesteryear! Its sturdy constitution is just as impressive, if not more awe-inspiring in different ways. This building evokes fairytales of another just as exciting sort. Don’t dismiss it!

9. Alcazar of Segovia, Spain

It’s time to head south to Spain for this wonderment! This stunning building has been influenced by many cultures, and so its façade tells just as many stories. One special detail is that Isabella I of Castile was crowned there in 1474.

10. Windsor Castle, England

Last, but not least, you must pay a visit to Windsor Castle. Queen Elizabeth II, the Queen of England, spends her time away from public life here, but it’s not just an ordinary home. This castle is full of gold, splendor and the most formidable regal architecture.
